Flyer: Fremont Library Outreach

Date: 2/1/14-2/3/14

The project in completing the flyer for the Fremont Library Outreach started on 2/1/14 at 6:00 pm. Jamie started out by drawing a simple sketch of the layout in which she would use to format this flyer. Then at 6:48 pm, Jamie completed the brief description of the outreach event and sent it to Stella for revisions and clarification. During this process, Samantha finalized the date and time in which we would be holding the outreach and which room it would be in. I used simple text boxes to insert the basic information onto Adobe Illustrator CS6 and placed them in a way where they would be balance between the left and right. This helped the flyer to stay balanced in the composition of text so it would not create an uncomfortable imbalance towards the viewer’s eyes.

On 2/2/14 at 8:00 pm, Jamie looked for a robot image that would fit in the flyer. However, there was no image on the internet that Jamie found suitable for this flyer. Therefore, at 8:30, she decided to design a robot herself. She drew 5 designs of the robot she would recreate on Illustrator and decided to use a simple and eye-catching robot. Afterwards, at 9:00 pm Jamie creates the robot on Illustrator using the pen tool by making shapes and connecting them with points. She has specifically positioned and drawn the robot so it would fit on the right side of the title but also lead the viewer’s eye towards the title. Jamie did this by creating a robot arm/hand that points in the direction of the title. Then, she added red circles around the title to emphasize its importance by color. In contrast however, the other texts on the flyer are boxed in different shades of grey. Jamie bolded and enlarged the text that regarded the age group, location, and time to once again show the importance. At 9:30 pm, Jamie touches up on the flyer by adding her final designs where two transparent triangles are overlapped on the right side of the description.

On 2/3/14 at 7:34 pm, Jamie emails her finished flyer to Stella for suggestions of revision. She is requested to add sponsors on the flyer and also the logo of our team. So then, at 8:00 pm, Jamie receives all the logos of our sponsors and adds them onto the bottom of the flyer. At 8:20 pm, Jamie designs a professional yet simple logo for VOI and inserts it on the bottom of the flyer with the logo of Geek Squad’s. The final flyer is emailed to Stella at 9:00 pm and is approved for usage of publicizing our outreach.

Flyers are printed on 2/10/14 by Stella and distributed among team members to post at schools. However, we also contacted Chadbourne Elementary School so we were allowed to place flyers in their students’ Tuesday Folder and further advertise to kids 5th-6th grade. Our team members posted them around Mission San Jose Highschool, to target individuals in 9th-12th grade.

Overall, this experience helped us learn as a group of how to market and advertise the outreaches we were holding. We learned to create a form of advertisement that would be effective yet simple in publicizing our outreach and in the end our results were extremely successful.
