Work Done:

We arrived at the Fremont Main Library at 9am to set up. Team 5220 Roboknights and two girls (Annie and Lindsay) from our new sister team also came along to help us. By the time we set up the playing field, chairs, science activity, and Q&A area, it was already 10:00 and people started to walk in! We first introduced ourselves, our sister team members, and also Team 5220. Stella gave a short intro about the different aspects of FTC then everyone gathered around to watch as Derrick and a member of Roboknights did a short robot demo. After that, we let the audience choose where they wanted to go. Many of the students headed straight to the science activity or test driving the robot while most of the parents went to the Q&A. At around 12:00 there were only a few people left, so we finally started to pack up.

Highlights and Reflections:

This event was very successful, however there were still some factors that could have been improved.

-The slingshot car more popular than our previous project (cork catapult), and we ended up running out of wooden frames. In the future, it would be a good idea to have more than one project for variety, or bring more materials. Another possible program is to create kits with instructions that students can bring home to make on their own.

-We had surveys again, but they were not very visible. Since most parents have smartphones, it would be more efficient to create an online survey. As an incentive, we could give out team buttons, or maybe extra science kits? It’s definitely something our team could look into for future outreaches.

-Many people came to our event right when it started at 10am, but others also wandered in after we started and missed the introduction to FTC. It would be helpful if we could repeat the intro, or have an information sheet about our team and FIRST for the latecomers.

Otherwise, we were all very proud of this outreaches success and hope to do more in the future!

also wanted to thank our parents for driving us to the library and helping to run the event, whether it be

answering questions or teaching students. Good job everyone!
